This is a common, but also challenging question, because you have to assess the value of what the spouses own when carrying out a financial settlement in a divorce. First, each spouse's assets must be valued, which then becomes part of the basis for division.

Once the value of the spouses' assets has been determined, you can start dividing them between the parties. This can be a more complicated process in practice than it may appear on the surface.
